Pre-Construction Geotechnical Evaluations
(Soils Reports)
A pre-construction geotechnical evaluation should be performed with three goals in mind: to explore the subsurface conditions at the site, determine the properties and behavior of the materials encountered, and provide recommendations for construction.
1
Explore the subsurface conditions
Exploring the subsurface conditions is the first step in any pre-construction geotechnical evaluation; the purpose is to observe and collect representative samples of the subsurface materials. Site exploration is commonly performed with vehicle-mounted drilling and sampling equipment, backhoes, or by manual hand-operated equipment.

Canyon Geotechnical works with several subcontractors to find cost-effective solutions to perform thorough site exploration based upon the site location and geology.

2
Determine the properties of the materials encounted
Will the materials encountered at the site support the proposed construction?
How will the materials encountered at the site behave when subjected to adverse conditions?
Are the materials at the site suitable for use as fill soil for construction?

These are the kinds of questions that a pre-construction geotechnical evaluation answers.
3
Provide recommendations for construciton
Geotechnical engineering recommendations are like instructions for the structural engineer and/or earthwork contractor. They provide minimum requirements for the foundation design based upon the site conditions and guidance for how to process and rework the materials in order to grade the lot and construct a suitable building pad.

Often, these recommendations are required by a local municipalities building official, and they are always a good idea.
